船长The Captain

Xu Jingkun was born in Qingdao, Shandong, in 1989. When he was 12 years old, he lost his left arm due to an accident. People felt sorry for him and thought, “This child is ruined.” They believed he had no future. Although Xu Jingkun also suffered, he believed he had a future. He believed that if he did not give up, fate would not abandon him.

In 2005, 16-year-old Xu Jingkun joined the national sailing team and represented China in the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games sailing competition. After the competition ended, the sailing team disbanded, and he could no longer continue as an athlete. He left the sailing team and had no place to live. However, he never gave up on his dream of sailing, nor did he forget that he was a captain. He wanted to go to the sea, which was where he found excitement.

Fortunately, with the help of friends, he found an old sailboat and spent nine months repairing it. He named the boat “Dream” and set out to achieve his dream. He decided to complete a circumnavigation of the coast of China. In 2012, at the age of 23, he said goodbye to his family and friends and embarked on a solo voyage. He encountered many difficulties at sea, but fate did not play tricks on him this time, and he succeeded.

In 2015, he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, participating in the world’s most challenging solo sailing race—Transatlantic Crossings. He became the first one-armed captain in human history to cross the Atlantic Ocean using a 6.5-meter boat. From 2017 to 2020, Xu Jingkun crossed the equator five times, sailing 34,000 nautical miles. He set records and changed history.

Sailing requires significant physical and mental strength, but during long voyages, he couldn’t eat fresh food and couldn’t sleep well. He could only sleep for 10 to 30 minutes at a time and had to get up immediately to work. He could only sleep for three to four hours a day. If he encountered bad weather, he often couldn’t sleep for 24 hours or even longer.

However, for him, these challenges were not significant. He aimed to achieve a greater goal in his heart. His biggest sailing dream was to participate in the Vendée Globe, the most brutal sailing race on earth. He had been preparing for this dream for 18 years.

The Vendée Globe is the most grueling race on the planet. Competitors sail a non-powered sailboat solo, starting from the city of Vendée, France, without docking, supply, or turning back. Due to the race’s difficulty and length, it is held once every four years. Xu Jingkun is the first Chinese captain to participate in this race.
